Pearson Personal Development is one of the three compulsory subjects in Grades 9 and 10, along with English and Mathematics. These important subjects deal with individuals and their interaction with others. It provides a learning foundation in assertive communication, decision-making and conflict resolution skills that young people can use throughout their lives.
The Grade 9 and 10 Personal Development books follow the syllabus in addressing a wide range of personal, social and community health issues such as reproductive health, growth in population, nutrition, physical activity, safety, sexually transmitted infections, drugs (including alcohol and tobacco), moral ethics, behaviour, peer pressure, freedom and the rights of the individual. The books encourage students to confront personal issues and deal with the responsibility.
During the Grade 10 year, students will learn about male and female reproductive anatomy with respect to conception and pregnancy, as well as the relationship between family size and family welfare. They will learn to recognise the characteristics of positive peer groups that contribute to class and school spirit and have the opportunity to consider their own groups and the impact they have on themselves and others.
Students will also learn to describe and explain how universal values apply to Papua New Guinea and the world and have the opportunity to explore how these values are maintained and practised by identifying the common characteristics of a range of role models. This will assist students to clarify their own personal values and recognising the factors that influence them.
By comparing and contrasting the effectiveness of a range of decision making and conflict resolution skills in regard to peer, gender, sexual and global issues, students will develop useful abilities for their future, and understand the importance of healthy living and respect for family values.
