Theodist Thunders Surge into Grand Final with Gritty Win

This past Sunday, the team powered through a tough semi-final match against Air Niugini, emerging victorious with a score of 16-9.

Their focused play and ability to capitalize on opportunities were key to their success. We caught up with team captain Gia Kopi to get her insights on the match, their journey, and the looming showdown against Kina Bank.

"Air Niugini gave us a real challenge," Kopi admits. "But there was a turning point where we just clicked. We were able to execute our game plan effectively and take advantage of the opportunities that came our way."

Kopi is quick to emphasize the importance of teamwork as a pillar of the Thunders' success. "It takes all of us. Irene in the centre, owning the mid-court; Veali on the attack ensuring those balls reach our shooters; Kila and Dau relentless on defence... and Manu and I doing what we have to with those shots. It's a machine, and when it's firing right, it's beautiful."

This marks the Thunders' second consecutive grand final appearance. Last year, the team lost a heartbreaker to Pacific Industries by a razor-thin margin. Kopi speaks about the determination to turn things around this time: "We're buzzing! We tasted defeat last year and we're hungry to prove what we can do."

When asked about their key strengths for the final, Kopi is clear: "Speed, defence, and pure skill in that mid-court. It's what we do best, and we're going to do it relentlessly."

Despite the win, Kopi acknowledges there's always improvement to be made. "We need to nail our set plays, clean up some of our defensive strategies, and most importantly, keep our heads in the game. Pressure can get to you, but we'll train for that."

The Theodist Thunders will face off against a formidable Kina Bank team, a tough opponent known for their consistency. "Kina Bank is no joke," Kopi says.  "But we love a challenge, and we're ready to give them everything we've got."

Kopi ends with a message for the Thunders' passionate fanbase: "Thank you! Your belief in us pushes us further every time. We're bringing your energy with us onto that court this Sunday and we are going to make you proud!"

The stage is set for a thrilling PCNC Division One grand final.

Will the Theodist Thunders avenge last year's loss and claim the championship? Find out this Sunday!
